CBS sells out last of Super Bowl ads

With the Super-bowl around the corner, many people across the world are ready to hang out with friends and watch the game. Who am I kidding, people are ready for the commercials during the Superbowl. USA Today states that CBS sold their last 30-second spot for a commercial. This is six days before the actual game which is much better than last year.

CBS said the final spot for the NFL championship game, one of the most watched TV events in the U.S., sold Monday morning, six days before kickoff.

That's a few days ahead of schedule. Last year, NBC still had two 30-second spots remaining two days before the game as the economy was mired in a recession, and announced only on the eve of the game that it sold out a total 69 spots.

The prices for the 30-spots topped at 3 million a piece which I feel is quite expensive. I think that this article shows two things-

1) This may be a sign that the economy is getting better, considering how fast the time slots were able to sell.

2) This shows the power of the people in a free market.

  1. I think that this does say alot about the change in econommy. 6 days opposed to two day, or even the night before is a huge difference. This means both that CBS is doing better an dthat businesses are doing better to be able to pay that much money for a thirty second ad. It may also show how much businesses are willing to risk to be known and get new business; they need it.

  2. I guess that quicker sales of commercials could be a sign of economic improvement although it's difficult to say. The Super Bowl is watched by millions of people across the nation so fast sales of commercials during such a widely viewd event doesn't necessarily mean the economy is improving. Super Bowl advertizement has to be a good investment given the huge number of people who will see that product. I would however agree that the article is more of a demonstration of the power people exert in the marketplace. After all, these spots are as expensive as they are because of how many people will see them.

  3. I think that, in America, the Super Bowl TV advertisement is one of the most effective way to advertise for a company. Most people, football fans or not, have a few favorite Super Bowl commercials (for me it's the Etrade advertisement with the talking baby), and those advertisements have a long-lasting effect on a lot of people. A really good ad can also get playing time after the Super Bowl for free thanks to YouTube.

  4. I think it's great how fast the slots for super bowl commercials filled up. And it could mean the economic improvement, but it could also mean some businesses are willing to pay so much money for a time slot BECAUSE they think a good/funny commercial during the super bowl might save their company from falling into a even deeper economic pit. So it could be a good and/or bad thing that the slots got filled so quickly, but either way i'm looking forward to some funny commercials :)
